Timbre Discrimination

The purpose of the study Timbre discrimination in musical context is to understand how interpersonal differences in musical background and musical education influence the perception of different musical timbres. A timbre is the perceived tone color of a musical sound, which makes a tone sound different on a violin compared to a piano, even if it is the same tone (in terms of pitch height).

Inclusion criteria

  • Age: 18-40
  • Normal hearing capabilities

Experimental Procedure (45-60 minutes)

  • Wear headphones and listen to short chord sequences (medium volume)
  • Short training phase to get familiar with the task
  • Task: decide as quickly as possible if the piano changed on final chord of the sequence
  • Questionnaire on musical background and some personal information
  • 15 CHF compensation
